THE NAHSAG RESEARCH TEAM HAS RELEASED A RESEARCH FINDING ON MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AMONG GHANAIAN STUDENTS.
“The conversation around student health in Ghana overlooks a crucial aspect: mental health. For health students, the stakes are even higher, as they juggle academic rigors, clinical rotations and the emotional weight of care giving.” With this as their introduction, the research team of the National Health Students Association of Ghana released their findings yesterday, 17th March, 2025 and from it, they pointed out key mental health issues facing Ghanaian Students which are listed below;
Academic and emotional stress, prevalence of depression and suicidal ideation, Substance abuse as a coping mechanism, cultural and social obstacles, inadequate support systems.
They again listed some barriers that prevent the above issues to be addressed and below are the listed points;
Systemic challenges, academic and clinical demands, cultural stigma and limited peer support.
They lastly gave some recommendations on how to support students’ mental health and below are some of the highlighted points.
Establishing of mental health infrastructure in schools, challenge cultural stigma, promote mindfulness and resilience among others.
They concluded by giving a call to action as “Mental health challenges among health students are a societal concern requiring collaborative action from policy makers, educators, healthcare professionals and communities. By investing in mental health, Ghana can nurture a resilient healthcare workforce equipped to meet the nation’s growing needs.”
